A pet memorial frame needs three measurements: the size of the paper it accepts, the opening through which the picture is visible, and the space where the frame will stand or hang. Write those separately before ordering a print. A file that fits the paper can still lose an ear, a name or a date behind the frame's edge.
This guide prepares an image for a frame you choose. It does not sell a frame or certify a printer's output. If you want to make new artwork first, the pet memorial portrait tool has a reference and identity review.
Record paper size and the visible opening separately
Read the maker's current specification or measure a frame you own. Do not use the outside width as the size of the print. A mount or mat can have a smaller opening than the paper behind it.
| Measurement | Why it matters | Where to confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted paper width and height | The sheet must fit the frame | Product specification or the frame you own |
| Visible opening width and height | Defines what can actually be seen | Mat specification or direct measurement |
| Overlap and mounting method | Determines what is hidden or held in place | The maker or framing shop |
| Total display size and depth | Determines whether it fits the intended place | Full product dimensions |
For a frame that also holds a collar, confirm that section separately. Velora Peace's shadow-box frame is designed around a photo strip and a collar; that layout should not be assumed to accept the same print as an ordinary photo frame. Ask about its actual openings and attachment method.
Calculate from the file you will print
Find the actual pixel width and height of the downloaded image. Use the original file's dimensions, rather than the apparent size of a screen preview. The checker below accepts a common paper size or your measured opening in millimetres or decimal inches; choose the unit in the tool.
Check a print size
The starting values are an example. Enter the pixel dimensions of your downloaded file.
409.6 pixels per inch · artwork occupies 5.00 × 5.00 in.
This calculates placement within the measured rectangle. It does not crop a file, produce a print or certify printer quality.
“Fit whole image” fits the complete file inside the specified rectangle and may leave unused space. Filling the rectangle estimates the pixels available after cropping; it does not edit the image or decide where the crop should fall.
For a fictional arithmetic example, a 2048 by 2048 image fitted inside a 5 by 7 inch rectangle occupies a 5 by 5 inch square at 409.6 pixels per inch. Filling the whole rectangle instead crops the sides and gives about 292.6 pixels per inch. These are calculations from dimensions, not measurements of detail, paper or printer quality.
Check the crop with the frame's shape
Make a paper rectangle at the visible opening's actual size. Put it over a test print or a printout of your proposed layout. Check the ear tips, whiskers, chin and any lettering. A fitting calculation preserves proportions; it cannot know which part of the pet matters to you.
If a name is part of a separate card layout, inspect its baseline and surrounding space. A generated portrait does not reliably typeset an exact name. The sympathy card tool uses a text renderer, but its existing card dimensions still need to fit the frame you selected.
Leave uncertain dates out. If the recipient would prefer the original photograph, do not replace it with artwork simply because the new file has a larger pixel count.
Send the printer a specific brief
Supply the image file, accepted paper size, measured visible opening and whether you want the full image or a crop. Ask the printer to confirm any required bleed, edge overlap, file format, color profile and proof process. Those requirements depend on the service you choose; this guide does not invent a universal margin or resolution threshold.

PET MEMORIAL FRAME — PRINT BRIEF Frame / maker / product specification checked on: Accepted paper width and height (include unit): Measured visible opening width and height (include unit): Mat or edge overlap confirmed by: Actual print filename and pixel width × height: Placement wanted: whole image with space / approved crop: Features that must remain visible: Name and date text, if wanted and confirmed: Who checked spelling and dates: Printer's required format / color profile: Printer's bleed and margin requirements: Proof method and intended display size: Approved proof filename / version: Who approves the final crop: Collar or other original object kept separately / agreed attachment: Actual printing and delivery person: Received print inspected before mounting: Original photo and final print file saved at: Ask the actual printer or maker to confirm their requirements. This brief does not place a print order or certify print quality.
The blank brief includes a place for the printer's reply and the person approving the proof. It does not upload the image or place an order.
Keep the file you sent and the approved proof together. If a shop offers an automatic crop, look at it rather than assuming “fit to size” kept the pet's head intact.
Review the proof at its intended size
View a paper proof at the size you expect to use. Look at the face from the planned display distance, then read the small lettering. Check the print's orientation and compare important coat markings with the reference image.
A good-looking on-screen mockup does not show the physical paper, mounting or glass. Before a large or important print order, ask what proof or small test the printer can actually supply and what corrections remain possible. Inspect the received print before mounting it.
For original collars or other objects, ask how a display can be assembled without damage. The keepsake record helps keep an item's source and the owner's decision alongside the display.
Keep an editable plan and a digital copy
Save the actual print file, measured dimensions, approved proof and source photograph. If you later change frames, check the new opening again rather than stretching the old layout.
Download studio works before their stated storage deadline. A paper print is a new copy; the original photograph and any generated artwork should remain separately identifiable. Finish the frame plan only when the measurements, crop and delivery person are clear.
Measure the visible opening as well as the frame
A pet memorial frame has more than one relevant size. Record the outer frame, the sheet of paper it accepts and the visible opening of any mat. The opening determines what part of the image will actually be seen. A print can fit the frame while the mat covers an ear, a name or part of the face. Use the maker’s measurements or measure the actual item rather than assuming that the advertised frame size describes every one of these areas.
Use the downloaded file in the size calculation
The print-size checker needs the real pixel width and height of the file you intend to print. A browser preview or screenshot may have different dimensions. The arithmetic relates pixel count, print size and pixels per inch; it does not certify visual sharpness, color or the printer’s result. For example, 1800 pixels across a six-inch print corresponds to 300 pixels per inch before any crop. If you crop the image, calculate again using the remaining pixels rather than the original dimensions.
Prepare a proof with the text in its final position
Place any name and dates within the actual visible area, leaving room for the mat and trim. Print or view a proof at the intended physical size so you can judge readability. Do not approve tiny lettering while the mockup is enlarged on a screen. If the text is uncertain, leave it out until confirmed. The memorial card print guide applies a similar distinction between canvas size and final printed use, while the portrait workflow focuses on the image itself.
Keep the print order separate from image approval
First approve the likeness and wording. Then confirm paper, finish, border, crop and delivery with the printer or frame supplier. Ask whether the shop applies automatic cropping or image adjustments, and inspect its actual proof. The custom memorial brief can record who handles each step. Keep the original photo, selected artwork and print-ready copy separately. A completed size calculation prepares the order, but it is not evidence that a print has been produced or that its appearance has been checked.
Pet memorial frame questions
Does an 8 by 10 inch frame always show an 8 by 10 inch image?
Do not assume it. Confirm the accepted paper and the visible opening; a mat or edge overlap can change what remains visible.
Can the calculator make a low-resolution photo sharper?
It calculates placement and pixels per inch. It does not resize, restore or create image detail.
Can I use a square portrait in a rectangular frame?
You can fit it with unused space or crop it to fill. Decide using the actual visible opening and a test layout, keeping the pet's important features in view.
